How Dormant Oil Can Help Reduce Insects

Updated: Feb 18, 2021

It's been said that a harsh winter will really help reduce the populations of insects for the following year. However, evolution has proven that the insects we despise have a way of making it through the elements. With this being said, there are things that can be done now to really help reduce insect populations.

Dormant oil applications can possibly save our favorite plants from being destroyed by insect infestations. This application is sprayed outside and inside the plants' foliage, which smothers the eggs and/or overwintering insects. If they can not emerge, they can not feed and destroy. Now is the time to do this application. Unfortunately, not all plants can be sprayed, but the majority of evergreens can (with a few exceptions).

Think of it this way: if you were an insect, would you hang out in a thin, defoliated plant all winter, or would you find safe harbor in the dense evergreen? Yep, that's right! Insects need shelter just like we do. We apply the dormant oil in these shelters to prevent the infestation from occurring. This important application can also help reduce the need for chemicals being used later to eradicate the infestation.
